Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
» is typically smoked in a Hookah? Most countries that smoke hookah use Naklia shisha in their hookah bars. Naklia shisha is a dense blend of tobaccos, different dried fruits and honey molasses. The smoke is passed through freezing cold water which helps the smoke cool provides for a smooth smoking experience. Originally it was used to smoke hashish and opium, which has contributed to the negative image some people still have of the hookah pipe, by this view has gradually been replaced with an acceptance for the hookah pipe as a social smoking ritual that is often conducted with no tobacco in the blend whatsoever. Hookah has also experienced a surge in popularity West, where hookahs, their various shishas and charcoal are now widely available. It has also been noted that the hookah has spread and has been accepted as far away as Japan.
» How can I know about the strength of the actual tobacco that goes into the shisha blends I am purchasing before I buy? It is quite difficult to know exactly what you are getting in terms of tobacco strength when you purchase a shisha tobacco but there are certain things you can do to make as informed a choice as is possible. The most obvious is to read reviews on hookah forums or posts on hookah sites. These are usually written by informed hookah smokers which will give you a clue as to the strength of tobacco in the shisha blend you are thinking of going for. In addition to this certain brands have “light” versions of their hookah tobaccos, these are usually given another name but the seller will ordinarily specify that it is the light equivalent of the full flavoured blend. Shisha tobaccos that do have a lighter blend are usually quite strong so if you are looking for a light tobacco avoid these and if you are indeed looking for a strong tobacco then these should be considered. Finally, another way of distinguishing the strength of the tobacco in your shisha blend is to find out from the manufacturer or the seller if the tobacco has been pre-washed before being infused with the various flavours. Unwashed tobaccos are always much stronger and thicker in smoke than ones that have been washed. You will quickly become accustomed to the brands you like and the ones you don't and the fact that many of these hookah manufacturers now sell smaller tester pouches is a great help to this effect.
» What is the best way to light my hookah coals This is a question that really depends on which coals you are using. Quick light coals should light up pretty much as soon as you hold a flame on them for a little while, traditional hookah coals take longer and may require the constant naked flame of a gas stove to get them going. The best way to light hookah coals, of both kinds is to use a torch lighter. The burst of heat from a torch lighter is much hotter than a regular lighter and so will heat the coals you are using up much faster. The added benefit of using a torch lighter is the fact that you can light your coals while they are actually on the hookah so you don't need to move them around and risk burning yourself or your furniture. Our advice for the best way to light hookah coals is to place them in your hookah, making sure that they are close together so that they also benefit from the heat of each other. Then use a torch lighter, making several passes over them and using tongs to turn them around if necessary. This is by far the quickest and most efficient method of lighting your hookah coals.
» Why is my Hookah loosing smoke, it does not seem to be airtight anymore and I can't draw enough smoke in. If you are not losing smoke from any of the seals between the sections of your pipe (vase/stem/hose/bowl) then you either have a multi-hose hookah and have not plugged the other hose ports or hoses or you have a faulty purge valve. The Purge valve allows you to clear the smoke from the chamber by blowing through your hose instead of sucking. It works by creating an air tight seal when not being blown through. A ball bearing rises while you blow allowing the stale smoke inside the chamber to escape. It sound like you may have lost a ball bearing while cleaning your pipe and this is why you no-longer have an airtight seal on your pipe. You can email the website you purchased you hookah from or alternatively the manufacturer to see about getting a replacement or you can experiment yourself with a few different sizes of ball bearings to see which one works for your specific purge valve. In future you should clean this valve separately using a cue tip and some warm water.
